COLUMBIA - Ellis Fischel Cancer Center is preparing to enroll hundreds of mid-Missourians in a 20-year long cancer study Thursday.

The Center will welcome interested participants from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in room 2008 to sign a consent form, complete an enrollment survey, have their waists measured and provide a blood sample. Those interested are asked to schedule an appointment prior to attending tomorrow's event by going online or calling 1-888-604-5888. The appointments should last between 20 and 30 minutes.

Debra Deeken, manager of cancer screening services, breast center and cancer rehabilitation, said the study has sparked a lot of interest because cancer affects so many people, "You know, one out of every two men is diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and one out of three women, it's a very common disease," she said. "So studies like this are critical in finding ways to prevent and then treat cancer."

Eligibility Requirements:

  • be between 30 and 65 years old
  • have no personal history of cancer, excluding basal or squamous cell skin cancer
  • be willing to make a long-term commitment to the study, including the completion of periodic follow-up surveys

Ellis Fischel was chosen as mid-Missouri's enrollment site by the American Cancer Society for its Cancer Prevention Study-3.

The study will track more than 300,000 partcipants across the nation for at least 20 years in an effort to find new genetic, lifestyle or environmental factors that cause cancer. Deeken said Ellis Fischel has already reached its goal of a few hundred appointments, but will still take more participants.

Over that 20-year period, volunteers will complete a survey every two to three years.

Previous American Cancer Society studies linked cigarette smoking to lung cancer as well as air pollution's effect on heart and lung conditions.
