Email Scam Targets Bank Customers
Boone County National Bank customers are the most recent to be lured into an internet phishing scam. The scam tactic sends phony emails disguised as legitimate bank transactions hoping to trick people into giving away personal and financial information. Bank officials say customers have been reporting suspicious emails.
MU's Tech Service Department wants people to be aware of how real these emails can look.
"They actually go out and create the logo of the company to the point that it looks very authentic," Geri Ann Hudson said.
Hudson also says no bank would ask for confidential information through an email. Just clicking on a link within the message can be dangerous.
"Do not click to open to check and see what it is, and then click out, because they've already got your information at that point," Hudson said.
The Columbia Police Department advises people to just delete suspicious messages and contact their bank by phone if they have any doubts.
