Ex-coroner scheduled for October trial on theft charges
PERRYVILLE (AP) - An October trial is scheduled for a former southeastern Missouri coroner accused of stealing more than $80,000 from a 94-year-old woman.
The (Cape Girardeau) Southeast Missourian reported that Herbert Miller is charged with one count each of theft and financial exploitation of the elderly.
Miller, who has pleaded not guilty, had been Perry County's coroner since 1995 before being charged in January of last year.
Miller reportedly obtained power of attorney for the woman in 2004 and is alleged to have inappropriately begun drafting checks from the woman's account beginning in 2009, after she entered a nursing home after being diagnosed with dementia.
An investigator said Miller acknowledged writing the checks but insisted they were for the woman's personal use, for services he provided or gifts.
