Ex-Missouri Jailer Sentenced for Inmate Assaults
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A former Missouri jailer is going behind bars himself. Vernon Wilson was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in federal prison for assaulting two inmates and directing violent inmates to attack two others.
Wilson's attorney calls the sentence disappointing and plans to appeal both the guilty verdict and the sentence.
Wilson was the longtime Washington County jailer convicted in March of violating the civil rights of the inmates. He was also convicted of two counts of lying to the FBI.
During his trial, witnesses said Wilson slapped inmates so hard their heads slammed back into a concrete wall. Two other inmates deemed unruly by Wilson were placed in an area of the jail with an accused killer. Authorities say Wilson put them there knowing they would be attacked.
