COLUMBIA - The Voluntary Action Center is celebrating the 27th year of the Adopt-a-Family Christmas Program. Families waited in line this morning, some since midnight, to sign up for a wish list. The VAC hopes to have sponsors for all the families by Thanksgiving. People stood in line in forty-degree temperatures outside of the Blind Boone Community Center in hopes a ticket. These tickets allowed the families to enter the building to fill out a Christmas wish list. Eighty to eighty-five tickets are given out each day of the program between now and Thursday. Executive Director Cindy Mustard says the program has about 400 sponsors. Ashleigh Roberts and her husband drove from Centralia to wait in line to sign up, hoping to get Christmas gifts for their two children. Roberts hopes she will get clothes for her daughter and toys for her son. She says she doesn't want to have to ask for free things, but it's what she has to do to be the "best mom she can be." Donna Murray has been volunteering for the program for fifteen years. She came to the center at 12:30 a.m. to wait with the families while they made it through the line. Murray says she volunteers because she "loves to see people smile." Another sign up session will be held Wednesday evening to accomodate working parents. Interested families have until Thursday to sign up.
