Family left home to avoid crime, report burglary
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis family that had been leaving their home at night to avoid crime instead became robbery victims.
Venus Houston was recently featured in a St. Louis Post-Dispatch story about shootings in the Baden neighborhood. Three people were charged in a fatal shooting on July 20. No arrests have been made in a second shooting that same day, when a 35-year-old man was shot in the back.
Houston said the family had been leaving their home at night to avoid random gun violence.
Houston told police Sunday that somebody broke into their home while they were gone and stole a television.
Police said there have been 77 burglaries in the Baden neighborhood this year, six more than in the same period in 2013.
