Family Takes on Trails
"In this race there's no prizes. It's just for the fun to run together," explained Marcela Chavez.
A three mile run is nothing new to this family of four.
"Alejandro, my son and I try to run everyday to work," said Chavez.
In fact, the youngest family member plans to run a marathon this summer.
"If I hurt myself or something and I can't do gymnastics, then I can run to stay fit," said Julia, Marcela's daughter.
Columbia Parks and Recreation sponsored the second Annual 5k to promote a healthy lifestyle and Columbia trails. Friends of Rockbridge State Park set up stations along the Katy Trail to teach kids about animals and the environment.
"And we really encourage families to take the children out. Children need to build healthy activites of hiking and exploring natural environments into their everyday lives," said Meredith Donaldson, a friend of Rockbridge park.
No matter the distance Julia says her favorite part about running is always the same.
Chavez says they try to run several miles as a family at least once a week. Parks and Recreation officials say the day was a success and they will probably continue the event in the future.
