Fifty Years Gives Catholics a Reason to Celebrate
Officials say nearly 2,500 people came to the celebration, which included a two-hour mass in the Expo Center. Parish members say the founding of the diocese 50 years ago was a needed change.
"Cause at that time there was like Springfield, Cape Girardeau, Kansas City, and St. Louis. And this region here was not incorporated. It was left out here on its own. That's when it came into being, 1956," said Kirk Koechner of St. Andrew's Parish in Tipton.
Attendees say the mass was standing room only. The Jefferson City Diocese serves 88,000 Catholics in 38 counties across Missouri.
