Fire School in Session

At winter fire school, fire fighters learn how to tackle ever changing challenges.

"You're here to learn something that is either going to help you protect yourself, or help you protect the lives and property of the citizens that you serve. And we've had countless stories of people who've come to one of our classes and learned something that helps them save a life once they got back home," said Kevin Zumwalt of the Fire and Rescue Training Institute.

The fire fighters at school say they learn as much from each other as they do in class.

"What'd you do, how'd you take care of it, and you'll get a different perspective of someone who thinks outside of the box or adding some case history that they've gone through and sometimes the networking is just as valuable as what you get in class," said Smith.

But this year the internet brings a second best option.

For the first time, rescue personnel can learn from these seminars via web cast.

"We want people to get training, but we know that budgets being tight, time being tight that not everyone can get here to Columbia this weekend," said Zumwalt.

With the new technology, firefighters can learn from their station-house between calls, while still on duty. This weekend's winter fire school began Friday with a fire equipment expo, the seminar will wrap up Sunday.
