Fire Victim Likely Died from Inhalation
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) -- Authorities say smoke inhalation likely killed a 71-year-old man during a house fire in the southern Illinois community of Anna.
The Southeast Missourian of Cape Girardeau reports that Larry Abernathy died in the Wednesday night blaze that destroyed his home, where he lived alone.
Anna Fire Chief Mike Stoner says Abernathy sustained no burns, and that he suspects the victim succumbed to smoke inhalation.
The possible cause of the fire hasn't been released.
Anna is a Union County city of about 5,100 residents that's about 120 miles southeast of St. Louis.
