Flags to be lowered for Missouri fire chief
ALTON (AP) - Flags on public buildings in a southern Missouri county will be lowered to honor a volunteer fire chief who was killed in the line of duty.
Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered the Missouri and American flags to be flown at half-staff on state buildings in Oregon County on Friday, when a funeral will be held for 45-year-old Eddie Johnson Jr.
Johnson was a full-time police office for the town of Alton as well as a reserve sheriff's deputy and chief of Alton's volunteer fire department.
He was killed Monday while driving to a house fire. The Highway Patrol says Johnson's SUV went off U.S. 160 west of Alton, struck a driveway and overturned. Johnson was thrown from the vehicle.
