Ford said today it will cease production of SUV's at Hazelwood effective March 10. Governor Blunt, Hazelwood Mayor T.R. Carr, St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley and UAW leaders said they will try and keep open the plant that employs 1,400 workers. Ford announced a massive restructuring this morning that includes closing Hazelwood and 13 other North American plants, eliminating up to 30,000. The automaker has been hurt by falling sales of SUV's. The Hazelwood plant makes the Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer SUV's. The Lincoln Aviator line at Hazelwood was discontinued several months ago.
