Former Columbia Police Officer Won't Be Reinstated
COLUMBIA - City Manager Mike Matthes announced Thursday he will not reinstate Rob Sanders to the Columbia Police Department.
The decision comes from Sander's November appeal hearing in front of the city's Personnel Advisory Board. Matthes had 30 days to respond to the appeal. The city personnel board made a recommendation to the city manager regarding the reinstatement at that time.
"After careful consideration of the testimony and evidence submitted during Mr. Sanders's appeal hearing, I will not reinstate Mr. Sanders," Matthes said.
Matthes said he would not discuss the matter further and that all parties have been notified.
Columbia Police Chief Ken Burton fired Sanders in 2011 after video surfaced showing Sanders shoving an inmate in a jail cell. Burton said he believed Sanders used excessive force. Sanders has said he was following his training and has been working to get his job back ever since.
