JEFFERSON CITY — A longtime mid-Missouri lawmaker has died of cancer.  The Cole County Coroner and Freeman Mortuary confirmed Friday long time state representative and senator Carl Vogel died Thursday night at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Vogel was 61 and survived by his wife, Kim and their children and extended family and friends. Services will be announced Saturday.

Vogel was a well-known businessman in Jefferson City as former president of the Jefferson City Coca-Cola Bottling Company. He served in the current Senate seat occupied by Sen. Mike Kehoe representing Cole, Callaway, Miller, Moniteau and Morgan counties from 2002-2010.

Sen. Kehoe released a statement Friday saying in part:

"Carl and his family are part of the fabric of Jefferson City and central Missouri, and Carl's kindness and generosity were matched only by his success in business. Carl's service on many boards, foundations, and in the legislature were the manifestation of a heart that cared for, and longed to help, others. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in the same senate seat that Carl held for eight years, but much more than that I am blessed to have known Carl Vogel as a friend."

Gov. Jay Nixon also released a statement Friday, which said in part:

"Carl Vogel was a proud lifelong resident of Jefferson City who represented Cole County in the House for 12 years and then the people of central Missouri in the Senate for eight years. As a legislator, Carl was dedicated to serving his constituents particularly on fiscal responsibility, on children's issues and on maintaining our historic Capitol...

"The First Lady and I send our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Kimberly, their two children, and all his loved ones, and join all Missourians in celebrating his life and accomplishments."
