JEFFERSON CITY - A retired school teacher, who was living in Sedalia, pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday for arranging to meet a woman and her 14-year-old daughter for illicit sexual activity.

A news release said 71-year-old Paul Cannon is subject to a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison without parole, up to a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Cannon posted an advertisement on Craigslist in January titled "Grandpa looking for a couple with kids." The post said "Grandpa looking for a couple that would like to include their kids in sexual fun. White man, very discreet, very safe, retired teacher... Age and race are not an issue."

A Boone County Sheriff Department detective responded to the Craigslist advertisement pretending to be a single mother with a 14-year-old daughter. The detective exchanged emails with Cannon for six days. Deputies said Cannon described different sexual acts he intended to perform with the daughter.

The undercover detective arranged to meet Cannon at a Columbia restaurant. Cannon was redirected to a nearby restaurant and then arrested.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to clarify Cannon's most recent place of residence.
