Fourth of July DWIs down from last year
MISSOURI - Missouri State Highway Patrol reports fewer DWIs and total crashes this Fourth of July.
However, the counting period is shorter than last year. The following numbers come from 6 p.m. on July 3 through 11:59 p.m. on July 4. That time frame is significantly lower than last year's 102-hour counting period.
2018 July Fourth Holiday Traffic Statistics:
Crashes - 114
Injuries - 59
Fatalities - 3
DWI - 40
Drug Arrests - 38
2018 July Fourth Holiday Boating Statistics:
Crashes - 5
Injuries - 2
Fatalities - 0
Drownings - 2
BWI - 3
Drug Arrests - 8
In 2017, there were 172 DWI arrests, 26 fatalities, and 1,072 crashes in Missouri statewide.
State Highway Patrol Sergeant Scott White said while 2017 numbers seem high, the recording time periods are very different and that needs to be considered.
"The Fourth of July is very busy on highways and waterways, but this was likely an average year," said White.
