Fraud Suspect Dies Hours before Trial
ST. LOUIS - A St. Louis man facing trial was found dead just hours before he was due in federal court.
Former St. Louis County official Doug Morgan was found dead by relatives in his St. Louis home on Wednesday. Authorities believe the 65-year-old died of natural causes. Morgan was due in U.S. District Court in St. Louis on Wednesday, where he was going to argue he was too sick to stand trial.
Authorities say Morgan lied to get loans amounting to $1.5 million, and solicited nearly $2 million in loans from his friends.
Morgan was the former chairman of the St. Louis County Planning Commission, and the chairman of the Missouri Employers Mutual Insurance Co.
