FULTON - A new exercise facility opened in Fulton Friday. The Y-Annex, a new building for the Fulton YMCA, is a 24-hour exercise facility. Any member of the YMCA can sign up to use the annex, but organizers expect most users to come from the nearby Fulton State Hospital.

YMCA executive director Patricia Miller says the facility will be good for those who work unusual hours. As a result, the staff and trainers will work according to the hospital's shift schedules. This will allow overnight workers from the hospital and other places to work out during unusual hours with the professionals.

"It will serve a unique population in our community, that being the folks that work shifts and work around the clock. Not only the state hospital employees, but from the sheriff's department to the dollar general," Miller said.

Trainers will work with members on day and night shifts. They will not work around the clock, though. The staff plans to work according to times when demand is highest.

Training coordinator Bryan Beanland says he hopes to help the late-shift workers stay healthy.

"We just kind of help guide them kind of in the right direction. So, you know, we kind of, you know, it's kind of a joke that I'm kind of their conscience," he said.

The annex is built in the hospital's renovated cafeteria. Miller says the YMCA and the hospital have a long history of working together.

She says about 10 percent of the hospital's employees are signed up to use the facility. Manny other businesses in Fulton are also open 24 hours.

"It's harder than ever for them, especially, to find a place to work on their physical health and stay healthy," Miller said.

She also says the hospital is one of the largest employers in Fulton.
