FULTON - Callaway County residents can bring in paint, oils and pesticides that are not safe to go into the trash. The collection center is paid for by a 38,000 dollar grant from the Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management District. Their goal is to keep chemical waste out of landfills.

"We are going to recycle the paint. We are going to recycle the batteries, and the motor oil and everything they're going to take and use in a heat furnace that they have purchased for the city," firefighter Steven Sessler said.

Columbia also has a waste collecting center. It has existed since the early 1990s and received more than 62 tons of household waste last year.
