Group Protests Alleged Assault

The students said a fight that started in a driveway near the Kappa Alpha house got out of hand when innapropriate language was used. There were concerns at first that this was a hate crime, but police are also now saying that's not the case.

Even though police have dismissed the possibility of a hate crime, students still felt the need to make a statement. MU junior Patrick Buckalew co-founded the Mizzou Students for Gay and Lesbian Equality last February and is always eager to share his message.

"We understand how is that it's not a hate crime or doesn't appear to be hate crime related, but what's important that it doesn't matter what his sexual orientation is. It doesn't matter who started it. It doesn't matter the intent of the language that was used," Buckalew said.

Most recently, Buckalew and his group were upset about the assault of 20-year old Daniel Maddox, a visitor from Maryland, where derogatory terms about gays were thrown around. The student group gave out fliers and white ribbons today in Speaker's Circle on the MU campus to protest violence that targets anyone, not just gays and lesbians.

While earlier reports called Maddox's assault a "violent beating", police have reason to believe only two or three people were involved. One member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity was arrested for his alleged involvment in the fight.

The National Director of Communications for the Kappa Alpha Fraternity said the fraternity is working with police and the university. He said their investigation includes eyewitnesses and differs from the accusations made by others.

Police say the investigation will probably wrap up tomorrow. Buckalew hopes this example of violence will at least raise awareness.

"It's like most people don't even know this fight happened," Buckalew said.

The Kappa Alpha fraternity member, Jeffrey Forkan was arrested yesterday on charges of 3rd degree assault and has to go to court next month.
