MEXICO (AP) - A northeast Missouri man was sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing his fiancé two days before they were to be married.

The Hannibal Courier-Post reports Calvin Duane Pettey was sentenced Monday for first-degree murder in the June 2010 shooting death of 32-year-old Sandra M. Fugate.

During Pettey's trial, Rebecca Kirk testified that she and Pettey were lovers and plotted to kill Fugate so Pettey would not have to marry Fugate.

Fugate was killed two days before the couple was scheduled to be married. Her body was found in the basement of her home in Hannibal. Kirk testified she could not go through with murder plans but did help dispose of evidence. She has not been charged.
