COLUMBIA – A small town group came together to make a big difference for Mid- Missouri veterans. A group of over 30 people from Hawk Point, Missouri led by Eric and Melanie Spires delivered homemade barbecue and visited with veterans at Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran’s Hospital during lunch.

The Hawk Point group wanted to do something good for others, specifically veterans.

Melanie Spires, coordinator of visiting our veteran’s trip said, “We just sat down and had a conversation one night, we wanted to do something to pay if forward and we wanted to do that with our vets. From there it kind of just escalated and turned into a much larger event.”

The group prepared the food the night before, taking six hours to grill the chicken and pork. They cooked enough food to serve 250 people. The group then rode on the “party bus” all the way to Columbia to feed and show their gratitude towards veterans. The group funded the trip by donations from local businesses and friends.

Adam Stanek, a participant of the visiting our veterans trip said, “Hawk Point is small, but we all get together and band together anytime there is something we think in our hearts is very worthwhile and we will put full force into it.”

Many veterans enjoyed the delicious barbecue and the great company.

Sylvia Jackson, Chief of Voluntary Service said, “The barbecue is the height of the weekend. Veterans get really excited to see visitors come in, all ages, diverse groups, and are always willing to welcome someone that just wants to stop by and visit them and thank them for their service.”

The group hopes that they can help bring awareness and encourage others to volunteer their time at veteran's hospitals and thank our nation's heroes.
