COLUMBIA - Open enrollment for 2016 health insurance coverage begins Sunday and mid-Missouri groups will be offering assistance to those wishing to sign up.

The open enrollment period runs from Nov. 1-Jan. 31. The penalty for not having health insurance is set to jump to $695, according to NBC News.

Organizations across mid-Missouri will be holding events and will be offering assistance throughout the enrollment period.

Central Missouri Community Action plans to hold enrollment sign-up events at the Daniel Boone Regional Library in Columbia every Saturday from Nov. 7-Jan. 30. Trained staff will assist people in reviewing their health insurance plans and choosing a plan that suits their needs.

A representative from the Community Health Center of Central Missouri said it will also be assisting people at its clinics in Jefferson City, Fulton, California and Linn. The organization said people wishing to receive assistance from the organization can make an appointment during business hours to meet with staff and discuss their options.

Cover Missouri lists additional organizations across mid-Missouri and the entire state offering health insurance counseling.

The Missouri Department of Insurance also warned residents to watch out for Medicare scams. Missourians can visit the Medicare website for tips.

An additional resource for Medicare coverage is CLAIM, the state health insurance assistance program from Missouri. CLAIM provides free help from certified counselors to people on Medicare and their caregivers.
