Heavy Rainfall Floods Farmland
But farmers in Prairie Hill are worried about more than a blocked roadway. One farmer said he estimates at least 1,500 acres of land will be ruined because of the flooding.
Local farmer Brent Wilkey said this is not the first time flooding has damaged farmland.
The past three years, Wilkey said, "When the water gets this high it has nowhere to go and it spreads out."
He said 100 acres of land are already damaged by the floods and he expects more damage to hit his land by the end of the week.
Wilkey's insurance will cover some of the costs but it is not always enough. Along with lost crops, Wilkey has other expenses like fuel and equipment that will put a bigger hole in his pocket.
Wilkey said, "It makes it very hard to try and make a living."
He said there is nothing that can be done except wait for the water to go down.
