Holts Summit ranked one of Missouri's safest cities
HOLTS SUMMIT- For the second year in a row, Holts Summit has been named one of Missouri's Top 20 safest cities by SafeWise, a home security and safety advice company.
Holts Summit placed sixth in the rankings, up from its spot at eighth last year. The list draws from Missouri cities with more than 3000 residents.
Greg Vandergrift, who moved to Holts Summit in 1985, said what he loves most about the city is the people and the environment they create.
"It's a quiet community, that's one thing I really like about it. Not a whole bunch of wild stuff going on, just a quiet community and good people live here," Vandergrift said.
Vandergrift's family was born and raised in Holts Summit, and for the past 32 years, he's seen no reason to leave.
"It's a good city to live in. It's a good place to raise kids, good schools. All my kids went to school here," Vandergrift said.
To determine the safest cities in the state, SafeWise used the most recent data from the 2015 FBI Crime Report. The company aggregates statistics on the number of reported violent crimes, such as aggravated assault, robbery or murder, as well as property crimes, such as burglary, arson or motor-vehicle theft.
The crime report showed Holts Summit having a rate of 1.95 violent crimes per 1000 people and 6.69 property crimes per 1000 people.
Greenwood topped out the list, followed by Cottleville, Bonne Terre, Ballwin and Portageville, respectively. No other cities in the Mid Missouri area made SafeWise's list.
