That animal was April, Stewart's prize mare who was seven months' pregnant. He found her late Wednesday morning lying motionless on the ground, just 20 feet from where his horses and mules eat hay.

Stewart's farm is along South Bearfield Road and he believes someone parked there and shot April.

"It was as intentional as it could be," he said. "Time heals all, but it's going to take time."

Boone County sheriff's detective Mike Stubbs said, "We may be able to count on one or two hands all the times we've had an animal shot in the pasture or in a field like this."

Call CrimeStoppers at 875-TIPS if you have information about the shooting.
