Independent Businesses Seek Local Shoppers
The group is Columbia Locally-Owned Retail and Services. It asked Governor Jay Nixon to declare July 1st through 7th Independents Week statewide. Its aim is to get the community to try buying more products and services from locally-owned businesses.
"Most people have a pre-concieved notion about buying local. They don't realize how much they use from local businesses already. You can get more than food, it's tax services, massages, and lawyers," said COLORS Executive Director Johanna Cox-Littrel.
Creative Day Art Studio is a local business and COLORS member that lets people make art with a local twist.
"We buy most of our supplies locally, then we don't have to wait for shipping and we save money," said co-owner Katy McDonald. "We can also cater to our customers because we know them so well."
Members of the community can also support local businesses and get discounts by becoming a member of the COLORS alliance for a fee.
