COLUMBIA - Most industries, if not suffering, are not prospering in today's economy. But one Mid-Missouri company is thriving in its industry; the ironworks industry. Jay Curry founded Spicewine Ironworks in 2004 with his brother Steve Curry and business partner Randy Ham. The company specializes in barbecue smokers and related accessories, and Jay Curry says that its the only private manufacturer of smokers in Mid-Missouri, if not all of Missouri.

"As far as I know, there is no one else in the Columbia area or the surrounding area that is a cooker manufacturer. We're about the only ones", said Curry.

And while Curry affirmed that his business had been profitable to this point, he also said that external factors played either a supportive or destructive role in his company depending on the economy.

"It's growing, but its kinda complicated with the gas prices and steel prices fluctuating daily. You really have to keep a good eye on what's going on around you because last year steel prices almost doubled in us, and in order to stay viable and make a profit we had to make adjustments accordingly", Curry said.

But the smokers they do manage to make have proven popular with customers. Darryl Smith, a KCBS-certified barbecue judge, bought his smoker from Spicewine back in January and hasn't regretted it since.

"100 percent satisfied. It's the best cooker I've ever used. I've used a few and this one is the easiest and gives me the best and highest quality results", he said.

Smith added, "All of my other cookers, it was a constant monitoring and adjusting the airflow and everything else. Here, set it, forget it and you know its gonna do what its gonna do".

As a testament to his products' quality, Jay Curry reported that the first smoker he ever made for the company is still in working condition.

"A lot has changed since that very first one we built and we're gonna refurbish it and probably put it in the store as a reminder of where we started", he said.

Spicewine Ironworks is located at 1333 Business Loop 70 East in Columbia, Missouri. Distributors ship its products around the U.S. and are looking to expand into international markets in the near future.
