It's No Picnic
Lois and John Bess are the lead organizers of the Tebbetts picnic. But the 59-year-old tradition is ending, at least for this summer. The reason? Not enough help.
"We had our first picnic down at the school house," Lois said. "On the school grounds, we built a platform for the dance, and we had bingo, and everybody made the prizes."
The picnic is a fundraiser for the town, and it brings the community together. John thinks the food is one of the best parts.
"The mutton is our favorite. We got the reputation for the best in the state," John said.
John and Lois say the whole community must come together if the picnic is going to come around again, especially for next year. It would be the 60th anniversary.
Until then, pictures are the only thing to help Tebbetts remember their summer tradition.
