Jamestown Honors Fallen Marine
Family, friends and former classmates have decorated the streets with 4,000 U.S. flags to remember Lance Cpl. Leon Deraps, who died in a roadside bomb attack on May 6.
Hundreds of people with flashlights will line the streets when Deraps' body passes through town about 1:00 a.m. Tuesday, on the way to Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home in California, where it's scheduled to arrive about 1:45 a.m. His body will return to Jamestown Tuesday afternoon for visitation at his school.
"There are flags that line the road from the school where Leon's body will leave Wednesday morning, all the way out there, about a 5- or 6-mile stretch, flags every 10-15 feet," explained Superintendent Jim Deekan. "It's just amazing, the amount of support and the amount of work people have gone to."
