JEFFERSON CITY - Jefferson City School District Superintendent Brian Mitchell announced his retirement Wednesday. Mitchell will step down from his position at the end of the 2014-2015 school year.

Mitchell began his work in education as a elementary teacher and worked his way up to principal, and later superintendent of JCPS.

Mitchell received statewide and national attention for his work with early education and in mentoring programs.

JCPS officials did not release any additional information on plans for finding a new superintendent.
