Jefferson City Diocese Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Janet Theby has been a member of the diocese for 13 years.
She's celebrated the 50th anniversary by watching the pope's official organist play in Jefferson City.
Because her church means a lot to her. She's one of many Missourians who finds a family in this diocese.
"I figure my bigger family is the community here," said Theby.
It started out small 50 years ago, but now serves 88,000 catholics in 38 different counties.
"Seeing how the church has grown in central Missouri and it has great significance for us," said Father Jeremy Secrist Assoicate Pastor.
"The church in Rome has been there for over 2,000 years," said Secrist. "Yes, I think in that regard we are quite young."
And that means they still have room to grow.
"We're looking forward to the future, with great hope for continued growth and abundance," said Secrist.
And Theby agrees. "It's always nice to know you're part of a vibrant, growing community. That's a good feeling."
A feeling the church hopes its members will enjoy for many years to come.
The diocese is celebrating this anniversary throughout the year.
The next celebration will honor couples in the church who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
