Jefferson City Office Group Wins $5,000 Lottery Prize

JEFFERSON CITY - When the jackpots get big, a lot of individuals join together and buy Missouri Lottery tickets as a group. Following the $648 million Mega Millions jackpot, one group in Jefferson City is celebrating a $5,000 win. Nine co-workers from Urology Care in Jefferson City descended on Lottery headquarters on Dec. 18 to claim a $5,000 prize for matching four white-ball numbers and the Mega Ball number. They will split the windfall equally, amounting to about $555 per person.

The nine co-workers are: Louis Freidinger, 64, Lisa Mietzner, 54, Kathleen Webb, 59, Sherri Whittington, 41, Dr. Michael Severance, 51, Dr. Eric Vogt, 38, all of Jefferson City; Laurie Werdehausen, 52, of Holts Summit; Dr. Douglas West, 49, of Lohman; and Janis Wetherell, 64, of Fulton.

Co-workers said that Dr. West kept them abreast of the latest jackpot amounts, and that Freidinger purchased the tickets. The winning Quick Pick ticket was purchased at Gerbes Supermarket, 4805 W. Truman Road in Jefferson City, just down the street from the Urology Care office. The winning numbers for the Dec. 17 Mega Millions drawing were: 8, 14, 17, 20, 39 and the Mega Ball number was 7.

All but one employee joined the office pool - she claimed the group would never win. She changed her tune as officemates celebrated the windfall. Most said the money would help with Christmas.

"The only reason I played is because I didn't want to be the only one showing up to work if we won," joked Dr. Severance.

They'll all continue to work following this win, but there's renewed vigor for the office pool. They may start collecting for the $60 million Powerball jackpot this Saturday.

"Get in it!" said one of the winners with a smile.

Mega Millions is twice-weekly Draw Game with jackpots that start at $15 million. The $648 million Mega Millions jackpot on Dec. 17 was split by two winners, one in California and one in Georgia. Twenty players in other states won a $1 million Match 5 prize in that drawing, and there were more than 500 winners of $5,000 for matching four white-ball numbers and the Mega Ball number. This group was one of 11 winners at this prize level in Missouri.
