Jefferson City Outdoor Consumption Extended
JEFFERSON CITY - The outdoor consumption of alcohol during events in designated festival districts is allowed through at least November 2012. After a trial period allowing outdoor consumption during five Thursday night events in downtown Jefferson City in June went smoothly, city council approved continuing the ordinance.
The original ordinance featured two festival districts, but the new ordinance added another and gave the City Administrator the ability to approve another area if necessary. The three districts are the Downtown Festival District, the Dunklin Street Festival District, and the Central East Side Entertainment District. The Downtown district includes High Street from Jefferson to Monroe with about a half a block down Madison in each direction from High. The Dunklin Street district includes Dunklin Street from Madison Street to Jefferson Street. The Central East Side District includes High street from Chestnut Street to Ash Street and down Ash Street from High to Wall Way.
The ordinance allows the possesion of alcohol in the permitted districts only if it is in a "Event Cup" and the person is wearing a wristband. The Event Cup will be provided by the businesses involved in the event and will be a plastic cup unique to the event.
In November 2012, City Council will discuss whether the ordinance needs to be revised, removed, or continued.
