Jefferson City Sam's Club opening hiring center
JEFFERSON CITY - Sam's Club is hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony at its Hiring and Membership Center Tuesday at 9 a.m.
The new Sam's Club, located on Stoneridge Boulevard, is expected to create approximately 170 new jobs.
General manager Jeremy Jones said the company plans to hire new associates for positions such as cake decorators, merchandisers and cashiers.
The store will be the first Sam's in Jefferson City and Chamber President Randy Allen expects it to do great things for the city.
"People like to have it in the community," he said. "It is such a draw for the people outside."
Allen said as it is now, many people head to the Columbia Sam's Club, so this will help people stay nearby as well as bring in people from surrounding areas, especially south of the river.
He also doesn't expect the store to hurt local business due to the uniqueness of Sam's Club.
"When the second Wal-Mart was made, people were concerned. But Sam's has a niche that others don't. I think in the long haul it will be beneficial," Allen said. "You need good retail to have people come here, stay here and live here."
Allen said the hiring center, located in the Jefferson Plaza on Missouri Boulevard, will only be open during the months prior to the store opening.
Jones said Sam's Club will open in late July.
