Jefferson Co. Leaders Pass on Safety Grant
HILLSBORO (AP) - The Jefferson County sheriff says politics is behind a County Council vote to reject a $22,000 state grant that would pay for drunken-driving checkpoints and seat belt safety checks
County elected leaders voted Tuesday to not accept the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission's five-figure grant. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Sheriff Oliver "Glenn" Boyer criticized the council's "dysfunction" in not accepting what he called the state's "free money."
Several residents at the meeting criticized their treatment by sheriff's deputies at roadside checkpoints.
