Johnson Gets Death Sentence Again
Judge Gene Hamilton followed the recommendation of a Pettis County jury, and sentenced Johnson to death by injection. One victim's relative said he hoped this latest resentencing is the last for Johnson.
"Ít's been a long and exhausting process and, quite honestly, it would be nice if it could draw to a conclusion very soon," said Jerry Blakey.
However, Johnson also gets an automatic appeal of his death sentence. The Missouri Supreme Court overturned his earlier death sentences for killing three Casey's General Store workers in Columbia in 1994. The state's highest court said Johnson's previous lawyers failed to introduce evidence of his deprived childhood, illegal drug addiction and possible mental retardation. The jury rejected those arguments this time.
