Joplin Residents Should Beware Unlicensed Insurance Companies
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri insurance regulators are warning Joplin residents to beware of companies offering to negotiate insurance claims as they recover from the May 22 tornado.
The state insurance department says anyone representing consumers in negotiations with insurance companies must be licensed as public adjusters.
The agency cautions that some unlicensed companies may describe themselves "insurance claims specialists" or say they can help get a home rebuilt better than before.
State Insurance Director John Huff says policyholders should first try to resolve differences with insurance companies themselves. If that doesn't work, he says, they can file a complaint with the state insurance department.
If homeowners want someone else to represent them, Huff says they should first check with the department to see whether the person is a licensed.
