Joplin Running Event will Change to Honor Victims
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) - An annual 5K and half marathon run in Joplin will change its name and mission next year.
The run, currently called the Boomtown Run, will be renamed the "Joplin Memorial Run." It will be dedicated to those who died in the May 22 tornado this year.
Next year's run will be May 19 to correspond events surrounding the first anniversary of the day the tornado hit Joplin, killing 161 people.
This year's race was canceled because of the tornado. Instead 325 runners from across the nation went to Joplin to help with recovery, and runners in other states raised $37,000 to donate to Joplin.
