Joplin Schools Hold Reconnect Rally for Students
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) -- A rally to celebrate the upcoming school year drew thousands of Joplin area schoolchildren and their families who are still recovering from a devastating tornado.
The event was planned to reconnect students with their classmates and educators before schools open next Wednesday.
The rally included games and fun, but also a memorial video for those killed in the tornado and prayers for the upcoming school year.
The Joplin Globe reports that organizers of the event wanted to give students and teachers a chance to reconnect and briefly forget the stress of the tornado before the school year begins.
Four schools were destroyed and six other district buildings were damaged by the May 22 tornado. Many students will attend different schools and some schools will operate in different buildings.
