Judge Sentences Tisius to Two Death Penalties
COLUMBIA- On June 22, 2000, Tisius and Tracie Bulington broke into the Randolph County jail hoping to free Bulington's boyfriend, an inmate there.
The goal was to intimidate jailers at gunpoint, but the pair never completed the mission. Instead, Tisius murdered the jailers with shots to the head.
Tisius was retried in July over his prior death sentence, not his conviction for the crime.
Prosecutors wanted to keep the death penalty, while Tisius asked for something less. Tisius admitted at the time of the retrial he deserved whatever sentence he got, saying, "I know I deserve whatever I have coming."
Tisius said at the time if he had to do it all over again, he would kill himself before taking the lives of the jailers, saying they didn't deserve what he did to them.
