July 4th celebrations: Where to celebrate
COLUMBIA - As mid-Missouri prepares to recognize the country's 239th Independence Day celebration Saturday, residents have plenty of options for fireworks displays:
- In Columbia: "Fire in the Sky" begins at 6:30 p.m. with activities and entertainment in Flat Branch Park. Fireworks will begin at 9:15 p.m. from the top of the parking garage at Sixth and Cherry.
- In Jefferson City: "Red, White and Boom" begins at 9:15 p.m. with a pre-show. Fireworks begin at dark. Fireworks will be launched from the north lawn of the State Capitol. The show is part of Jefferson City's "Salute to America" celebration in downtown Jefferson City.
- In Fulton: Residents can attend the city's 4th of July parade and fireworks show. The parade begins at 11:00 a.m. at the south entrance of William Woods University on 12th street and ends at the south end of Court Street. Those hoping to participate in the parade should call Dave Beaver at 573-642-5479 or Tom Maupin at 573-642-2920. The city's firework's show begins at 9:00 p.m. in the Country Club Park.
- In Moberly: The city's 4th of July extrvaganza begins in Rothwell Park at 12:00 p.m. Entertainment and activities include an aquatic center, family games, live entertainment and more. $1 entry is required for the aquatic center. A fireworks display will begin at dark, launched from the Howard Hills Athletic Complex. For more information, people in Moberly can call Moberly Parks and Recreation at 660-269-8705 x 2013.
As residents celebrate the holiday, officials were asking people to take safety precautions, and in many cases, refrain from launching fireworks on their own.
