Kansas City police commander to head Temple, Texas police
TEMPLE, Texas (AP) - A top police officer in the Kansas City, Missouri, department was selected to be the new police chief in Temple.
The Central Texas city announced Floyd Mitchell will take over its police agency in September, succeeding the retired Gary Smith.
Mitchell is a division commander in Kansas City, where he's worked since 1989. Among his duties were homicide commander and SWAT commander.
Mitchell emerged from a field of 63 applicants for the job in Temple, about 125 miles south of Dallas.
Temple City Manager Jonathan Graham told the Temple Daily Telegram Mitchell's extensive experience running a large division in a major U.S. city and his open communications policy contributed to his selection from among five finalists.
