KC Diocese Lawyers Seek Dismissal of Lawsuit
KANSAS CITY (AP) - A day after the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph announced a plan to investigate reports of inappropriate behavior by its employees, lawyers for the diocese asked a judge to dismiss a lawsuit that accuses a priest of abusing a boy 40 years ago.
Diocese lawyers said in Jackson County Circuit Court on Friday that the lawsuit should be dismissed for several reasons, including because the claims weren't filed in time.
In the lawsuit, a 52-year-old man claims he was molested in the 1970s by the Rev. Michael Tierney. Tierney has denied the allegations.
Rebecca Randles, the lawyer for man claiming the abuse, said the lawsuit was filed in enough time.
The diocese announced Thursday what it called a "sweeping plan" to deal with recent alleged sexual misconduct in the diocese.
