Kidnapping Heightens Child Awareness in Mid-Missouri
Police say this is what everyone should be doing in situations like this.
"I don't want to put fear in anyone, but at the same time I feel like it's necessary to remind folks that there are certain steps that you can take, and should take, to protect your own individual security," said Captain Michael Smith, Jefferson City Police Department.
Smith says people should take obvious, but often ignored, precautions like locking doors, closing and locking ground floor windows, avoid posting signs that announce the birth of a child or birthday, and never let strangers inside your home. Although situations like this are rare, police say people should be aware of the possibilities. The U.S Postal Service is also spreading awareness about the system. Amber alert stamps are available for 39 cents.
