ASHLAND - Drivers on the road to celebrate Labor Day were delighted to see cheap gas prices this weekend.

According to AAA, the national gas price average at $2.59 is 25 cents cheaper than the same indicator last Labor Day weekend. This year, the national gas price is four cents cheaper than the national gas price average Labor Day weekend in 2017, according to AAA.

Nic Ugolini, who works as a salesman, said he's happy gas prices are cheaper this holiday weekend.

"You know whenever gas prices go up not only do you have to spend more at the pump, but then you can't kind of do other things you want to do," he said.

Hurricanes can sometimes affect gas prices depending on their location because they can disrupt domestic crude oil production, according to AAA. Hurricane Harvey, which went through the Gulf of Mexico, increased the national gas price average by 30 cents in 2017, according to AAA. The Gulf of Mexico has dozens of oil refineries.

Hurricane Florence, which went though the Carolinas, had little to no effect on national gas prices because the east coast houses pipelines and terminals. Hurricane Dorian is not likely to disrupt gas prices because the storm is forecasted to move-up the east coast similar to Hurricane Florence.

Don Scott, who filled up his gas tank in Ashland, said he wouldn't be surprised if gas stations raise prices anyway.

"I think it's one of those situations, where if they can raise prices, they raise them," he said. "I want my money to go as far as it can go. We all work hard everyday to take care of our families."

Drivers can expect gas prices to decrease as more gas stations shift to winter fuel. The blend gives consumers cheaper gas because it's cheaper to produce.
