Lady Cougars Make it to Third Straight AMC Championship Game
COLUMBIA -- The Columbia College Lady Cougars have made it to the championship game of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament for the third straight year after a victory Friday night over Park University in the AMC semifinals. Top seeded Columbia defeated the fourth seeded Pirates 83-67 in the Arena of Southwell Complex. The Lady Cougars, ranked No. 24 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, improve to 24-8 on the season.
Park started the contest strong but Columbia quickly took control, going on a 12-0 run and holding the Pirates scoreless for over four minutes in the first frame. Columbia drained five three's in the first half and took a 42-23 lead at the half after shooting 56 percent from the field.
The Lady Cougars continued to push ahead of Park in the second half, pulling away with a 27-point advantage midway through. But Park would not quit and went on a 16-3 run late in the half to bring the deficit to 13. The Pirates sent the Lady Cougars to the charity stripe 26 times in the second half alone and that turned out to be the difference maker as Columbia connected on 23 of those attempts and walked away with the 16-point win.
Five Lady Cougars finished in double figures, led by Julie Teeple's 21 points and seven rebounds. The junior was six-for-eight from the field and seven-for-eight from the free throw line. Heather English dropped in 17 points and Ashley Fisher had 16 points. Tierney Seifert and Airelle Eldridge finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Eldridge also grabbed seven boards and Seifert dished out six assists.
Danilla Fabbri led the Pirates with 15 points.
Columbia will take on second seeded William Woods University in the Championship. William Woods defeated Williams Baptist College tonight in the other semifinal match-up by a score of 80-55. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 5th in the Arena of Southwell Complex.
