Lady Cougars Take Down William Woods, Claim AMC Title
FULTON, MO -- The 15th-ranked Lady Cougar basketball team closed out the 2012-13 regular season with a 76-65 road victory at American Midwest Conference rival William Woods University on Saturday afternoon. Columbia completes the regular season with an overall record of 24-6 and a 17-1 mark in conference play, finishing as co-AMC champions with Lyon College. The title marks the Lady Cougars' fifth straight regular season championship and ninth overall in the program's 12 seasons. The Lady Owls, ranked 22nd in the NAIA, wrap up the regular season 23-5 overall and 14-4 in the league.
Columbia led by as many as nine in the opening half after an early 8-0 run and eventually took a 36-29 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Junior Heather English knocked down five of the Lady Cougars' six three-pointers in the first 20 minutes and led all players with 17 points at the break.
William Woods pulled within two at 36-34 to open the second half, but Columbia would answer with a 13-3 spurt to extend their lead out to twelve at 49-37. The Lady Cougars stretched their lead out to 17 points at the 5:44 mark on their way to victory, finishing the game at 36 percent (27 of 76) from the field while holding a 54-46 advantage on the boards.
English finished with a game-high 27 points to lead three Columbia players in double figures and also added a team-high 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. The Lady Cougars also received 16 points and 10 rebounds from Julie Teeple in addition to 15 points from Tierney Seifert.
The Lady Owls were led by double-doubles from Priscila Santos (25 points, 13 rebounds) and Katie Scherder (13 points, 10 rebounds).
The Lady Cougars will return to action on Wednesday, February 27th to host the quarterfinal round of the AMC postseason tournament. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Arena of Southwell Complex. Columbia claimed the No. 1 seed in the tournament over a tie-breaker with Lyon College and will host all games they play in. Following the completion of all regular season games tomorrow a bracket will be announced with the seventh seed hosting the tenth seed and the eighth seed hosting the ninth seed in the play-in Monday night. Columbia will take on the winner of the eight vs. nine game on Wednesday.
