Land Donated for New Park in Mexico
The 143 acres are located along US Business 54 near Teal Lake Road.
The southern two thirds of the property will be used for a park and remaining one third will be subdivided and sold as a means to fund the park.
"I think it is a really unique situation for the city, they are going to get some really nice park land and basically have an opportunity to fund the development of a park without costing the city," Mexico City Manager Tanna Parish said.
The gift came with several stipulations particularly for the land set aside for subdivisions. The lots sold to homeowners have to be a least 1.5 acres and the homes built on the land have to be at least 25,000 square feet on the first floor.
Mexico residents seem to be happy with the plans.
"I'm glad they decided to donate to the city of Mexico and that they are not going to develop the property. It is a historic piece of Mexico and that way people can enjoy it the way it has always been," Mexico resident Sandy Barnes said.
Although there is much work to be done before the park is ready, the council assured residents that the park will be a very natural environment, free of ball fields and large shelters.
The land was donated by Warren C. Smith Jr. And his wife Tina.
