COLUMBIA - The estimated jackpot of the Mega Millions lottery hit $355 million on Tuesday, the second highest in Missouri history. Although the chances of winning are extremely slim, local convenience and gas station workers said that hasn't slowed down sales of the tickets.

Matthew Dalton works at Phillips 66 in Columbia and said about every other person he served Tuesday bought a lottery ticket. He also said even people who don't usually play bought tickets because the pot is so large.

In fact, one woman getting gas at Phillips 66 admitted the only reason she bought the tickets was because her boyfriend told her today was the big day.

Atlil Kumar of Hitt Street Mart told KOMU this period is usually a slow time for the store, with so many college students out of town. But by early afternoon, he sold Mega Millions tickets to more than 20 people.

According to the Mega Millions website, the chances of winning are 1 in 175,711,536. That doesn't seem to phase some, and one man buying tickets said he believes you have as good a chance of winning as you do as losing.

Ticket sales end at 8:59 pm. To hear the winning numbers, tune into KOMU News at 10.
